What is the Manualised Clinical Intervention?

A manualised parent support intervention for clinicians committed to parent-inclusive practice.

What is the Manualised Clinical Intervention?

A manualised parent support intervention for parent-inclusive practice.

The Parent Hope Manualised Clinical Intervention is designed to improve treatment outcomes for children and young people experiencing complex mental health presentations by engaging parents as active participants in change.

Rather than directing parents how to manage their child, the intervention facilitates greater awareness of relationship patterns, helping parents develop their own agency, clarity and capacity to influence family functioning. It is not directed at fixing the child, instead, clinicians guide parents to observe interactions, reflect on what is within their control, and experiment with meaningful changes in themselves.

The structured manuals provide a clear framework while allowing clinicians to thoughtfully adapt the intervention to their professional context and the needs of individual families.

Who is it for?

  • Psychologists
  • Counsellors
  • Social Workers
  • Psychiatrists
  • Family Therapists
  • School Wellbeing Staff
  • and other professionals supporting parents of struggling children and adolescents.

What makes the intervention distinct?

Supporting parents to discover their own capacity for change.

Unlike many parent programs, the Manualised Clinical Intervention is not based on giving advice or teaching parents techniques to manage behaviour.

Instead, it facilitates parent awareness and the development of internal agency. Parents discover their own solutions by learning to observe relationship patterns, understand anxiety within the family system, and make thoughtful adjustments to what is within their control.

The clinician's role is not to solve problems for parents, but to guide a process of observation, reflection and self-discovery through a structured counselling framework.

What the Program Covers
A practical framework for engaging parents as active participants in change

The Manualised Clinical Intervention combines Bowen Family Systems Theory, Dr Jenny Brown's doctoral research into parent agency and hope, decades of clinical experience, and ongoing refinement through supervision and parent feedback. It provides clinicians with a practical framework that is structured enough to support consistent practice while remaining flexible enough for real-world clinical settings.

  • Step back from an anxious focus on their child
  • Observe family interaction patterns more clearly
  • Understand how stress and reactivity circulate in relationships
  • Strengthen thoughtful leadership and connection
  • Support responsibility and independence in their child
  • Reduce over-functioning, rescuing and escalation

The Parent Hope Journey

A structured pathway using manuals to guide parents from depleted hope towards greater confidence and agency.

The intervention follows a structured progression through two stages.

Stage 1 — Stepping Back

Parents learn to observe family interactions with greater awareness by exploring:

  • What fuels dependence or independence?
  • Where is my energy directed?
  • How am I reacting?

Stage 2 — Stepping Up

Parents begin making thoughtful adjustments to themselves by exploring:

  • What is within my control?
  • How do I take an "I" position?
  • How do I strengthen connection without increasing intensity?
  • How do I remain patient with gradual change?

The goal is not a quick fix, but a gradual recovery of hope, confidence and thoughtful leadership within the family.
